How to save a bit of dinero with your tushy

I have learned to live on a pretty skimpy dime in my time. We grew up very lower middle class (maybe poor, if we hadn’t had people like my grandmother to live with now and then) and we knew how to stretch things to begin with. I had privileged friends gawk at my ability to live on a meal a day—“My children would never go hungry! They are too resourceful!” are the words she used that I’ll never forget and always recall with contempt—not understanding that it was simply a way of living that you do when you are broke, that you are already used to it. When there are bills to pay, you know they come first; now that I have a child, it is she that is priority number one. I can sacrifice just like my parents did before me.

But there are other ways to save money besides going hungry. One of my favorite ways to save money is a trick that I learned while living in Spain, where hot water was more costly than cold, where you had to pay for everything. I learned to use a free bathroom every time I came across one!

You have to understand that many restrooms in Europe are off-limits if you do not buy something (food, clothing, whatever), and that many restrooms actually charge you a few cents to use them, though you can learn how to wiggle yourself beneath the door into the stall without popping in the coins, especially with a friendly spotter…!

So you find the ones that are free—like the ones on the campus that I attended—and you use them whenever you can. The one in my dorm was only one floor down, so I used it almost every time I needed to go to the bathroom. Not only did I rarely have to buy toilet paper—I cut the water bill down quite a bit.

Today I still try to use this tactic as much as I can—especially with a family of four. I don’t make sure we use the potty before we leave; I make sure it’s the first thing we do once we are there! Every restaurant, every store—I used to be scared to use them (you can think scary films for that) but now, even though I still get a little creeped out, I never fail to. I don’t know how much we’re saving, but I know that my bill is smaller than my neighbor’s—so maybe it does help!

And if not, well, it’s still less energy and toilet paper that we’re using.

Free Software Every Day

Save money on your essential apps and programs

While the prices of computers, tablets, and smart phone have been declining, the cost of running essential software or apps have not.  Good software can cost hundreds of dollars. To save money, people usually switch to open source alternatives that serve their purpose but are not as good as the licensed software.  So, when I come across a deal or a freebie for quality software (not a trial, not a limited version – but a registered and legal version of the software) I usually scoop it up.  Here are a few of the sites I regularly visit to find the un-pirated, licensed software/apps I need at the great price of Zero!

Giveawayoftheday.com (PC) - Every day they offer free licensed software that you would have to buy otherwise.  Each piece of software offered is well reviewed and only available for 24 hours as a freebie.  While some offerings aren’t as good as others, there are some incredible offers.  I look here every morning to see if I can pick up a quality program for free.

Like its sister site, Game Give Away of the Day (PC) offers free, fully-licensed game software for PC’s.  While this is billed as a daily giveaway, it seems that it is updated a little more sporadically.  For example, it has been four days since their last update.  But, if you are a gamer and want to enjoy something new on occasion, check this site out to get your fix.

The Appstore by Amazon (Android Phone/Tablet) – Like the Google Market for Android phones, Amazon has launched their own Appstore.  One of the advantages of using the Appstore is that Amazon offers a free app of the day.  As mentioned above, sometimes the free app isn’t much to write home about (or text a friend about), but on occasion they throw us a bone of a high value, must have app.

Great Offerings for Electronics

Since I’m all about discounts and savings – especially for electronics, I would be remiss not to mention some of the daily deal websites that are available to you. Below, I’ve listed some of the top Daily Deal websites that offer great options for electronics  Many of these are One Day / One Deal sites that have very limited offerings, but rotate their inventory daily.  So, it is important to check the sites each day.  And, check them early in the morning as popular items can go fast.

  • Woot (woot.com)
Woot's main website generally offers only one discounted product each day, often a piece of computer hardware or an electronic gadget. Other Woot sites offer one original t-shirt per day, five selections of wine per week, one children's item per day, four deals sponsored by other websites, and one closeout deal per day. Deals are posted at 1AM EST.

  • One Sale a Day (http://1saleaday.com)
One deal in each of five categories: Main, Wireless, Watch, Family, and Jewelry. Each deal is posted at Midnight EST, and is only available for 24 hours, so hurry and buy them before today's products are replaced by tomorrow's!

  • Tanga (http://www.tanga.com)
Amazing Deals! Tanga is all about saving you money with the best deals you can find on the Internet. Every night at 10PM EST they offer you new 24-hour daily deals in Electronics/Gadgets, T-Shirts, Magazines and more.

  • Ben’s Outlet (http://bensoutlet.com)
At Ben's Outlet you'll discover a variety products. Avoid they sudden disappointment of missing out on a great deal because it sold out by the time you clicked on it.  Ben's Outlet always displays what's in stock, they tell you what percent of that item's inventory they have left, so you don't have to rush your decision.

I, myself am a fan of these sites.  I like that they offer significant savings and I don’t have to do any of the haggling or bargaining on prices -- it’s already done for me! You can purchase items for yourself, or as gifts for others (read the fine print first). Just don’t get caught up in the trend and go overboard. We’re all about saving money, not obsessive spending!

Japan’s Big F***** Sale!

Yes, It’s Vulgar, But I Can’t Seem to Stop Laughing

I can’t post the sign or the actual language here, but I wanted to share this bit of news from Japan that I can’t stop laughing over. Apparently a department store in Japan has executed a campaign with the slogan “F*****’ Sale.” This isn’t the first time we’ve seen such faux pas in the signage world, especially when it comes to marketing between cultures. One of my favorite examples, of course, is the Chevy Nova, a car that I loved growing up. Once I discovered that its name translated to “doesn’t go” in Spanish, of course, I laughed at the irony and have not been able to help but grin every time I have hear the word since.

But this is a pretty blatant use of a curse word, and I have to wonder if there really is an innocence behind its use or if the company is just banking on using the shock tactic to reel consumers into its store. “F*****,” after all, doesn’t have many other meanings that I can think of.

It does bring to mind several other fun examples of the wrong words being used for ads and sales, though. I have seen dozens of these on Facebook, and they serve as good reminders that we need to be careful about word choices—and that not all phrases translate well into different languages. My own Spanish teacher used to illustrate this to us each year by reading a letter by a man named Domingo Fuentes, who translated his own letter into English word for word, including his own name—“Sunday Fountains.” For some funny signs around the world, click here. You can find out where to get “genuine fake watches,” as well as where “only 50 cents is enough to feel the magic atmosphere” of a public water closet!

There is also this wonderful collection of faux pas, including a doctor who considers himself a specialist in women and other diseases, a bar in which women are asked to not have children, and a restaurant that is open for more than seven days a week, which sounds like a Beatles song. This collection isn’t as visually striking—it’s text only—but many are funnier than the previous gallery.

And finally, for hours of funny sign enjoyment, click here for even more lists and galleries to browse through. If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to laugh more, this might be a good page to bookmark.

Save Ten Bucks (or Much More) Today

When someone mentions ten percent off, I’m not that impressed. In fact, my husband gets ten percent off with his employee discount, but we still shop elsewhere because we can do it cheaper! Unless you are spending a lot of money, ten percent isn’t that much.

But when you mention saving ten bucks altogether, you’ve got my attention. Here are a few ways you can save ten dollars today.

  • Switch your prescription. If you are renewing it anyway, you may be able to save up to ten bucks; call around and see who has it for cheap. Keep in mind that switching to a generic is even cheaper. I saved my aunt over $100 by switching from one bone medication to another.
  • Make it yourself. If it’s a coffee, or a lunch out, or a housewarming gift, or anything else, you can probably make it yourself rather than spend up to $10 on it.
  • Borrow. Instead of purchasing new books or movies or music, borrow them from friends or the library. Depending upon how much you typically buy, you could save yourself hundreds of dollars a month! Remember that many libraries also offer inter-library loans if you can’t find what you are looking for. Just give the librarian the title of the book and the author. It may take you a bit longer to get it, but it will be free and well worth the wait. If you have a local bookstore that accepts credit, you could also exchange books for new ones.
  • Rent. This is a great strategy for everything from suits to textbooks to videos.
  • Swap. Host a swap party with friends to get rid of things you don’t need and to get things you do need. We bring our old items to our monthly family game night to swap and get rid of as prizes, but you could easily do this with housewares, clothing, whatever you want. Have a party to go to? Host a swap for a new outfit and save yourself lots of money.
  • Shop used. You don’t need everything to be brand new, after all. Try Craigslist, Good Will, and other thrift stores. Our local homeschool group has its own classifieds as well and we have gotten everything from free books to clothing through it; see if yours does, too. You can even get prom dresses for cheap this way!
